Product Description
Remotely seals off abandoned drains and sewer laterals permanently.
A semi-porous bag that contains a sealed sachet of PU resin foam is remotely positioned inside the sewer lateral using a duct rodder or fiberglass fish tape. The cylindrical shaped bag containing the expanding foam forms a permanent plug. Some of the foam seeps through the bag adhering to the inner walls of the pipe permanently anchoring the plug in the desired location.
Benefits:
- Avoids excavating in the road, trenchless technique
- Bag can be installed 50’ from access point.
- Prevents ground water from entering sewers
- Avoids unauthorized connection to clean water drainage systems via abandoned laterals
- No risk of sealing material entering main
- Easy to use – available in kit form
- Once mixed the PU foam is inert and can be disposed in normal waste
Applications:
For use on clay, concrete, metal and plastic pipes. Ideal for use by contractors, water and sewerage companies, facilities management and maintenance teams.
- Standard kits are available for 4” and 6” pipes. Other dimensions are made to special order.
- For use on disused drains, sewers, abandoned ducts etc
- Prevents the ingress/egress of water, rats, mice and other vermin.
- Stops the passage of sewer odor
Method:
Use any ½” duct rodder and a pipe camera to locate a suitable position for the DRAINBLOCK BAG. The two-part resin foam is mixed in the FOAMPACK sachet and then zipped into the restraining bag together with the piercing knife. These are then placed in the outer DRAINBLOCK and the zip closed. Drain rods are attached to the nylon tube on the bag and the bag is pushed into position with the aid of the camera.
As the foam expands, the knife pierces the sachet allowing the foam to fill the inner and then outer bags. At full expansion, some of the foam seeps through the bag to create an adhesive seal against the pipe wall.
DRAINBLOCK will start to act as a permanent seal against water and odors within around 30 minutes depending on temperature. A full cure will be achieved in approximately 12 hours.
Foam Curing Time and Expansion Rate:
The foam will take around 4 minutes to expand and be cured enough to hold pressure in around 1 hour. The speed of expansion and curing is dependent on ambient temperature and the temperature of the foam kit prior to its mixing. The temperature of the foam is displayed on an attached thermometer strip. You should only use the kit if the temperature strip reads between 5 and 20°C (41F-68F). If the kit is hotter than this, it is possible to cool it down to a working temperature by submerging it in cool water. If the kit is too cold, it can be gently warmed inside the cab of a truck. Do not use a flame or direct intense heat such as an exhaust. Once cured, the PU material is an inert substance. There is no leftover unmixed material once installed as the packaging becomes part of the body of the seal created.

FAQs:
How do you prevent the possibility of the foam spilling into the sewer main if set too close to lateral/main connection?
If you plan on positioning the system closer than 10” to the connection, we can add a non-porous dam system to the front of the Drainblock bag to prevent the foam from over-spilling forward. It does not affect the system’s ability to seal. The system generates a seal length of 12” -14”.
Can the Drainblock hold back grout like a dam in order to complete the lateral abandonment process?
Yes. Testing was carried out on a plastic drain pipe and a weight of 11,023lbs (5000kg) was successfully applied to a cured Drainblock bag via a hydraulic jack and load cell with no adverse effects. Many customers use the system for exactly this.
